The Marans is a fascinating breed originating in France.   They have a long history which can be read here and are best known for their chocolate brown eggs.  They are a work in progress but have come a long way thanks to many dedicated breeders.  Currently the APA recognizes the Black Copper, Wheaten and the White varieties.  Other varieties are Blue Copper, Black, Blue, Blue Wheaten, Cuckoo, Birchen, Black Tailed Buff, Splash, Ermine (Columbian) and Duckwing.
